Firsts that Change the Future

What is HB 1802?

  • Texas House Bill 1802 was the first psychedelic research legislation passed in the United States.

  • It was the first public funding for psychedelic research since the Controlled Substances Act.

  • It established the first psilocybin for PTSD clinical trial in the United States.

  • It created the model for psychedelic advocacy that has been used across the country.

HB 1802, passed in 2021 during the 87th Legislative Session, established a clinical trial for the use of psilocybin to treat PTSD in Veterans. Baylor College of Medicine is conducting the trial in collaboration with HHSC in partnership with a military Veterans hospital or a medical center that provides medical care to Veterans.

The study also includes a literature review of the efficacy and access to psilocybin, MDMA, and ketamine in the United States.

After the passage of HB 1802, Texas emerged as a leader in advancing psychedelic therapies in the US. This legislation paved the way for underserved groups, including Veterans, to access these therapies.
